Background & Challenges
The battery holds the most energy and the greatest safety risk of any component on a drone. The problem is that its condition does not show on the outside. This manufacturer was facing recurring battery-related issues in the field, such as sudden voltage drops and overheating, which raised safety concerns and led to claims. Its existing outgoing inspection went only as far as checking whether a pack charged or what voltage it held, so it could not screen out packs that looked fine but had degraded cells, imbalance between cells, or rising internal resistance. Problems with the BMS or connectors, and the risk of overheating, likewise did not surface through simple measurement.
Solution and Deployment Effectiveness
DRQC_04 performs integrated diagnostics of battery cells, the BMS, cables and connectors, and state of health (SoH, how much performance a battery retains compared to new) on a single line. It quantitatively measures cell condition and charge and discharge behavior to confirm SoH, and also checks BMS operation and protection circuits, connector integrity, and thermal anomalies. Taking these five items together, it judges not simply whether a pack powers on, but whether it is sound now and will remain safe going forward, expressed in numbers.
As a result, by screening out batteries that are fine today but about to fail before they ship, battery-related field returns fell by about 45%. Detecting heat and thermal anomalies in advance also lowered safety risk. The condition data for each battery remains as a record, providing a basis for later traceability and quality improvement.
Key Insights
Battery safety is decided less by responding after a problem erupts than by catching it before shipment. Only when the condition that a single voltage reading cannot reveal is confirmed quantitatively, down to cells, service life, and heat, can you trust that battery to fly to the end.
